Senator Feinstein,
I read with incredulity and then revulsion at the threat your husband made to the University of California officials if they did not ban anti-Israel commentary and activities on Campus.
This is what was written in the newspaper:
But the new push for strict "anti-Semitism" standards has powerful supporters. One of the regents strongly advocating for the "speech code" is Richard Blum, a wealthy defense contractor and husband of Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). Last month, Blum threatened that his wife will unleash political consequences if the UC system fails to adopt the strict standards.
He said that you would unleash terrible political repercussions if they did not acquiesce to his demands. This is intimidation and blackmail.
The first amendment is still the law of the land as far as I know. The nation of Israel is engaging in apartheid and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian Arab population who are the indigenous owners and proper inhabitants of Palestine. Israel, in violation of International law continues to steal (appropriate) Palestinian land and allow more and more settlements to be built in the West Bank. Israel bombed the hell out of Gaza a year ago, and to date, after promising faithfully that she would be instrumental in its rebuilding, not one structure has been replaced or rebuilt.
Many of the young Jewish settlers are little more than thugs, and are allowed by the government of Israel to carry arms. They nightly attack Palestinian neighborhoods, often accompanied by the Israeli military and attack, provoke, set fire to family homes, terrorizing, kidnapping, beating and sometimes their forays end up in murder. The Palestinians are not allowed to be armed and so are unable to defend their property, their families or even their very lives.
Gaza residents get 6 hours of electricity per day, are virtual prisoners in their own land and are subjected to racial taunts and threats on a daily basis.
Just a few days ago Palestinian peace activist Dr. Hashem Azzeh was killed by the IDF he died as a result of the Israeli army gassing him with tear gas even when he went inside his home they threw canisters in after him. When it was noticed that he wasn't breathing, the IDF guards at the checkpoints would not clear the medics to take him to the hospital and so he died. They don't throw one, two or three canisters as is protocol in crowd disbursement they throw as many as 50 canisters at a time at even a group of Arab people coming toward them who have showed absolutely no sign of hostility towards them.
They are now using snipers to shoot and kill rock throwers and are authorized if anyone throws a rock at them to return live fire and maim and kill. If a European jew however throws rocks at them there is no penalty. The sentence for a Palestinian Arab doing the same results in imprisonment of up to twenty years.
Not to mention the nightly raids by the IOF/IDF against Palestinian homes in Gaza where they enter in in the middle of the night with attack dogs and heavy artillery and oftentimes snatch the children out of their beds and carry them off.
Israel is committing and has been committing atrocities for many years and the U.S. government has turned a blind eye to her horrors and has prevented justice from being done by utilizing the UN Security Council veto to prevent even investigations into her misdeeds. This is unconscionable, immoral and absolutely unacceptable.
The US Congress being swayed by the big dollars of AIPAC has refused to get involved as well. The federal government is in violation of United States Federal Law in at least two areas that I am aware of. That of giving defense aid to a foreign country that uses it to brutalize civilian populations, as in the case of Israel's brutal oppression of the Palestinian Arabs under its control and also again, Israel, being a nuclear power, refusing to allow international nuclear regulatory inspectors in to verify her arsenal. Nuclear Regulatory Agency has asked repeatedly to be allowed to do their job and Israel consistently refuses to allow them entrance.
So, yes I will speak out against Israel and its brutal repression and oppression of the civilian population in the Occupied Territories. As long as she continues her murderous and genocidal policies I will raise my voice in redress to God almighty and to the world. I can do that because I am an American and I am protected by the first amendment of the United States Constitution. I will not be silent because silence = assent and approval. And, Senator, I DO NOT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM AGREE ONE IOTA WITH WHAT MY GOVERNMENT IS DOING IN SUPPORTING ETHNIC CLEANSING, MISAPPROPRIATION OF OTHER PEOPLE'S LAND AND PROPERTY AND KIDNAPPING, IMPRISONMENT AND TORTURE OF CHILDREN.
IF you do not believe what I am writing check out the UNICEF report on the treatment of Palestinian children in Israeli prisons. 60 percent had been sexually abused and virtually all of them had been tortured.
What in God's name is this country coming to. I watched you read on the floor of the Senate about the torture employed by the Bush administration and rightly so, but to allow this to go on in Palestine, using US funding is an abomination.
Your husband should not be threatening anyone with political reprisal if they do not do as he says.
I believe, as far as I know, the Constitution is still supposed to be the law of the land.
It is time for America to do the right thing. Immediately send a UN Protection Force to Palestine to protect the Arab civilians and demand an investigation into Israeli war crimes.
No one is above the law.
Sincerely,
Reverend Stephen Brackens-Brinkley
